Canada ponders bid for 2022 Winter Olympics

The Canadian Olympic Committee isn’t rushing to bid for the 2018 Winter Olympics. But chief executive Chris Rudge wouldn’t rule out seeking another Winter Games after Vancouver 2010. “While we have not made any kind of specific commitments, we certainly are looking at what the next Winter Games might be,” Rudge told 24 hours. “We probably recognize 2018 might be a bit premature, only two Games after Vancouver… 2022 might be realistic.” The International Olympic Committee opened 2018 bidding on Friday with Oct. 15 as the application deadline for national Olympic committees. The 2018 host city will be elected at the 123rd IOC session in Durban, South Africa July 6, 2011. Before he was voted COC president-elect, Marcel Aubut...

VANOC launches employee loan program to fill remaining jobs for the 2010 Winter Games

As part of its efforts to find creative solutions in a challenging economy, the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (VANOC) is offering businesses and governments the opportunity to give their employees a once-in-a-lifetime professional experience through working temporarily for the Games. VANOC has launched an employee loan program to fill most of its remaining 1,500 short-term jobs. Positions will last between eight weeks and six months, and the longest terms will begin as early as this September. Accommodation remains a challenge, so organizations able to loan employees already residing in the Vancouver and Sea to Sky regions are particularly encouraged to participate. Similar secondment programs have been used at...

Women to appeal ski jump lawsuit loss

A group of female ski jumpers said on Thursday they will appeal a court ruling that dismissed their bid to force Olympic organizers to let them compete in next year’s Winter Games in Vancouver. The women said they believe the British Columbia Court of Appeal will be able to act quickly enough for women’s ski jumping to be included in the 2010 Games, which are scheduled to begin in February. The 15 women sued the Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC), alleging that the failure to have both women’s and men’s ski jumping competitions in the 2010 Games violated Canadian civil rights protections. Ski jumping is one of the few Olympic sports that does not have competitions for both men and women. A judge agreed with VANOC that Canadian...

Women ski jumpers can’t compete in 2010

A Canadian judge has rejected a bid by female ski jumpers to compete in next year’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver, but agreed they were being discriminated against. The International Olympic Committee is discriminating against the women by barring them from the 2010 Games, but that decision cannot be challenged under Canada’s civil rights laws, the court ruled on Friday. “There will be little solace to the plaintiffs in my finding that they have been discriminated against; there is no remedy available to them in this court,” British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Lauri Ann Fenlon said. Ski jumping has been an Olympic sport since 1924, but is one of the few events in either the Winter or Summer Games to not have both a men’s and...
